Our advice page is intended to be a topical page containing helpful hints and tips. The initial chosen topic is Internet security.

Internet Security.

A very common problem encountered is computers being slowed down by the heavy workloads imposed on them by the amount of security software being used. Many users get caught in the trap of thinking they must use antivirus, anti-spy, and multiple firewalls inorder to remain safe when using the internet. The software vendors are only too happy to provide ever more complex and expensive internet security suites, however they will make your computer incredibly slow, and sometimes they disable security features that are already built into your system. My advice is to do the following :-

Firewall.

Microsoft XP and Vista have adequate firewalls already built into the Operating System, you do not need another. Also if you are on broadband your Router will also have a firewall installed.

If you are using an earlier version of Windows then it is advisable to install a firewall.

Anti-Virus.

Use a simple Anti-Virus Program, ie Norton, CA, AVG this will be perfectly adequate.Regularly scan your computer and all should be well.

Anti-Spyware.

Spyware can be malicious, however many internet companies such as Google etc do use types of spyware to analyse web surfing trends. If you want to be free of spyware you can download the Yahoo Toolbar, or Google and get a free anti-spyware program,(usually provided by Norton or CA). Run this on a regular basis and clean out all spyware and you should remain safe.

Backup.

Finally, backup your documents, either to CD/DVD or a separate Hard Drive, and keep the backups away from your computer. If you are unlucky enough to get a virus or Hard Drive failiure (and it does happen!) at least your documents and photo's will be safe.

Summary.

If you do require help with security issues please let me know, we do always carry a stock of Anti-Virus software at prices that are much more competitive than High Street Shops.
